About Administration

 

The District Administration, Andmans has entrusted with various activities such as Islanders Identity  Cards, Centrally Sponsors Schemes and revenue related activities.  The Deputy Commissioner, Andamans, being the Head of the District Administration is the agent for implementation of these programme. Workwise and scheme wise activities are as follows:-

Issuance of Islanders Identity Cards

The current phase got over on 31-12-2002, out of the 1,80,000 islanders who are eligible, 1,32,681 have been photographed in the first phase.  After the initial round of photography, the computer systems shall be permanently based in different Tehsils to facilitate taking of photographs of islanders becoming eligible from time to time and also for periodical updating of data.

Gratuitous relief/loans etc. to victims of calamities

Under this scheme, victims of fire accidents, cyclones, flood etc. are paid relief to tide over the situation.  The District Magistrate is empowered to sanction a maximum relief of Rs.750/-. 

Pradhan Mantri Gramodaya Yojana Rural Housing (Gram Awas)

The PMGY (Rural Housing) is based on the pattern of Indira Awas Yojana.  Ceiling of assistance under this scheme is Rs.22,000/- for construction of house and Rs.10,000/- for upgradation of katcha house into a pucca house.

National Social Assistance Programme

The Deputy Commissioner is the sanctioning authority for assistance under this scheme.  The financial assistance under the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) is meant for persons below poverty line.  The National Social Assistance Programme is having following three components.

National Old age Pension Scheme (NPAPS)

Destitute persons of 65 years of age or above are eligible monthly pension of Rs.75/-

National Family Benefit Scheme (NFBS)

Family of a household below poverty line shall get an assistance of Rs.10,000/- on the death of its primary bread winner if the age of the deceased exceeds 18 years and below 65 years.

National Maternity Benefit Scheme (NMBS)

Pregnant women of 19 years of age or more who belong to a family below poverty line is eligible for lumpsum assistance of Rs.500 for the first two live berths.  The National Maternity Benefit Scheme has been transferred to Directorate of Health Service in April 2001 in pursuance of Ministry of Rural Development's letter dated 17th March, 2001.

World War II Veterans Pension Scheme

The scheme the World War II veterans pension isn consideration of the sacrifices made for the country by the soldiers in the World War II and in consideration of the difficult financial situation faced by them because of their old age.  A&N Administration has decided to extend financial assistance to the World War II veterans in A&N Islands by payment of Rs.300/- per month to each of the veteran/widow during their life time.
